Some filters are grayed out or are unavailable for the image I'm editing. What's the matter?

Some filters are only available for images of 8-bits/channel or 16-bits/channel color depths and in specific color modes, such as CMYK. Adobe Camera Raw, 3D effects, Vanishing Point, and Filter Gallery options are examples of such effects.

Select Image > Mode in Photoshop to check the color depth of the current document. For related helpful details, see Image information.

Blur Gallery, Liquify, or Oil Paint effects are unavailable or grayed out. How do I enable them?

Some Photoshop features have special system requirements. For example, Liquify and Oil Paint require your computer to have a compatible graphics processor (GPU) installed. Also ensure that the Performance > Preferences > Use Graphics Processor setting is enabled in Photoshop.

Further, the performance of certain features benefits from enabling the OpenCL technology.

When I try to perform an action, Photoshop prompts me that there's not enough memory (RAM). How do I resolve this issue?Try adding scratch disks. Also, ensure that you have significantly more free disk space on your computer than the size of the document you're editing. Typically, you'd want 2X-3X free disk space when compared to the size of the document.
I tried to make an image sharper, but the text in the image is still blurred. How do I fix this issue?Ensure that the image you're trying to sharpen has a resolution of 300 px or higher. You could also try using the Type > Anti-Alias command on the Type layers to sharpen them.
I can't find the Refine Edge tool in the latest version of Photoshop. Has it been replaced by a new tool? The Select And Mask workspace replaces the Refine Edge dialog in earlier versions of Photoshop, offering the same functionality in a streamlined way. See Select And Mask | Tools at a glance.
I'm unable to open the Adobe Camera Raw filter while editing specific images.

Adobe Camera Raw supports images of 8-bits/channel and 16-bits/channel color depths. Ensure that the image you're trying to edit meets this requirement.

Select Image > Mode in Photoshop to check the color depth of the current document.

Is the Oil Paint filter grayed out? Do you get an error that the Oil Paint filter is not available when you try to run the 'Cartoonizer' action?

The above issues indicate that Photoshop CC and your graphics card do not work well together. When this happens, a number of Photoshop CC features become unavailable:

  • 3D
  • Oil Paint
  • Perspective Warp
  • Scrubby zoom
  • These 3 Render filters: Flame, Picture Frame, Tree
  • Birds Eye View
  • Flick Panning
  • Smooth Brush Resizing

Let's review the possible causes and try to fix the problem:

1. OpenCL has been de-activated after the latest Photoshop update.

This is easy to fix:

Press Control + K (PC) or cmd + K (Mac) to open the Preferences window.

Click the Performance tab on the left. Make sure the Use Graphics Processor button is checked:

Photoshop Oil Paint Plugin

Follow these instructions to reset the preferences. If the issue persists, proceed to the next step:

3. Your graphics card is unsupported.

If your graphics card is older than 4 to 5 years, then it is most probably not supported anymore in the latest Photoshop version. The same applies to non-dedicated graphic cards: in this case your computer doesn't have a separate graphics card, but the graphics processor unit (GPU) is integrated in the same chip with the CPU.
You can check the list of unsupported cards here. Follow the steps below to find out the model of your GPU:

If you have Windows 10:

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager and click the Performance tab.
  • Your GPU model is listed on the left column. Click on it to find out more information about the card, the driver version, etc.

If you have a Mac, click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen and select the first option: About this Mac. Your graphics card model is listed there.

4. Your graphics card drivers need to be updated.
